Why do we have all these disasters

What are the reasons for the seemingly increasing number of MAN MADE disasters (i.e. the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill and the Nuclear Catastrophe in Japan)?

In order to get our minds around this, I have found it helps to simplify the issues a bit. Here are the facts:

As a human race we do need Energy. Our survival depends on it. Currently, we “collect” it by either

a) Drilling into the core of the earth (for oil/gas/coal) or by

b) Cracking the earth open (“fracking”) in order to extract gas or by

c) Mining uranium, so we can use it in nuclear reactors for energy production (and/or to get enriched plutonium for nuclear bombs).

We then TRANSFORM (burn) that (once fossilized) energy and release CO2 into the air (or have highly radio active fuel rods to bury somewhere). Simple, no?

I’d like you to focus your attention on the word TRANSFORM for a moment…see, what we always seem to ignore/’forget’ is that we never get rid of anything, but simply change it’s form (in this case either gas, coal & oil to CO2 or uranium to nuclear waste).

Our planet and atmosphere is a (relatively) closed system, so EVERYTHING we put (‘release’) into it, COMES BACK and STAYS.

That didn’t matter much, when the earth was not very densely populated. But since the world’s population is exploding (7 Billion now and counting), that has changed.

Let’s imagine a simple life story.

Let’s say Bob and Barbara  -a young couple- buy a house. They move in and close all the doors & windows, start drilling some holes into their foundation (our earth) and start burning some wood in an open fire pit (coal burning energy plant) without ventilation. What happens? At first, not much at all.  Their foundation will stay in place; the structural integrity of their house is not really affected. The air (our atmosphere) in their house is becoming a bit smoky, but nothing that would really bother neither Bob nor Barbara.

Then, imagine their family grows, let’s say by 5 kids (while the size of their house doesn’t change), they start drilling REALLY many and deep holes into their house’s foundation and then crack it open in MANY places.

Then (because they have five kids who need to stay warm) Bob and Barb start adding more open fires in EVERY room of their house. They raise their kids as good as they possibly can and work hard in order to provide for their offspring, pay down the mortgage for their house, make many sacrifices for many years.

One day Bob & Barb decide it’s time to take it easy, to relax -for one weekend only- and spend some quality time together. They are both excited and plan the weekend of a lifetime. To make it all safe- they ask their teenage kids to watch over the fires and take care of the little ones while they are gone, and drive away for an extended weekend. They have a fantastic time together and get some well-deserved rest.

When they come home their house has burned to the ground.  They start yelling at the kids, because they didn’t pay attention to the fires, which is why the ‘accident’ happened. Then they all cry.

Everything they worked so hard for and built together is lost. A lifetime worth of memories is gone. A newspaper reporter comes by and writes about their ‘tragedy’. The local TV station sends a camera team and airs everything live.

But they are ‘resilient people’ -and swear to rebuild. And they do. A beautiful new home with many open fireplaces and no ventilation -and many drilled holes and cracks in the foundation.

Then their kids grow up and start finding their own life partners and grow their own families -and build their own houses -but this time they are smarter: There are no open fireplaces anymore that could burn down their homes or pollute the air, no holes or cracks in their home foundations. Now they have central HVAC systems in place, powered by clean nuclear energy.

And they tell their kids about the ‘disaster’ they experienced when they were kids. And why their lives are now so much better and safer because they don’t have to breath in smoky air, don’t face the danger of open fires or cracked foundations anymore. And they explain to their kids that nuclear energy is green and safe now and good for the environment -and that huge conglomerates and companies, who have the smartest scientists in the world working for them, closely guard it.

And then a tsunami comes and floods the nuclear power plant. And everybody starts yelling at the scientists, and the huge companies, which paid them, and the politicians these companies bought, because they didn’t pay attention to the potential dangers when they built these reactors, which is why the ‘accident’ happened. Then they all cry and suffer -and many die. Little babies get cancer -thousands of them.

Everything they worked so hard for and built together is lost. And many reporters come by and write about their ‘tragedy’. And major media networks send camera teams and air everything live and globally via satellites. But they are ‘resilient people’ -and swear to rebuild. And they do.

Then their kids grow up and start finding their own life partners and grow their own families…but there is hardly any air to breath, very little to eat, and not much wood to burn left. Most of them die.

Those who survive grow up and start finding their own life partners and grow their own families…what makes them different from their ancestors though is that they start to THINK.

They are the ones who understand they can no longer rely on those technologies which can destroy their homes and kill their children -or their children’s neighbors. And while they mourn the dead, they also celebrate life in all its beauty.

The Sole Purpose of Life

Jim and Katie are sitting on the back porch of their beautiful home in rural West Virginia. They cherish this hour of the day. It’s early morning, cool without being chilly, the sun is rising, the kids are sleeping and the house is still quiet. Both watch how the sky is getting brighter while drinking from their oversized coffee mugs.

“What’s on your mind, honey” Jim asks.

“Oh, I don’t know, Love. I guess I cannot stop thinking about these poor people around the world who are suffering from all these earthquakes and tsunamis and I just wonder if we are any safer in our country. I mean, are you not concerned? I feel there is more and more of this happening everywhere. I don’t even want to watch the news anymore, it’s just too depressing. On top of that we have all this unrest in the Middle East, the shaky economy, your company downsizing and all of that. Sometimes I wonder where all this might go and how it will change our family’s future. Are you not concerned?”

“Of course I am”, Jim says, his eyes focused on the horizon. Katie knows that view well; he looks like that when he is REALLY thinking, when he’s trying to come up with an answer. One that will make her feel better about everything and gives her the strength to be positive again, not worry so much. She knows she needs to give him space, let him finish his thought.

After a while he looks at her and says: “You know, I have thought about all of this for a long time now. I can’t say that I understand everything, because I don’t. But when I sit here and give it more thought, I cannot help myself but thinking that EVERYTHING on our planet and EVERYTHING in the universe is energy.

Every physicist knows that, Einstein proved it, and because of that WE know that. Does that makes any sense to you?

Katie nods quietly, trying to digest all of that. “I guess it does, Love. But what does it MEAN and where do we as a family go from here?”

Jim pauses for a moment and says: “I know this might sound a bit crazy: But what IF evolution and our lives had only ONE purpose: GROWTH?

I mean, think about it: In the beginning it was energy that created all the stars, all the planets, bacteria, oxygen, plant life, animals -and finally us. Then, once our physical development progressed, our brains/intelligence (intellectual development) did as well, which led us to these so called technological ‘breakthroughs’ that were a great blessing for so many years and are now kicking us in the butt, like in Japan right now. That’s where we are today.

I feel that we have become so wrapped up in making money, going shopping, taking care of the kids, our jobs and so on, that we have completely lost track of WHY we are here –and that’s why we have all these wars, oppression and destruction going on. Does what I’m saying make ANY sense to you?”

“It does, please keep on talking Love, I think you might be onto something here.”

“Well”, Jim says, “what IF we are hesitant to complete our (last) evolutionary purpose and destiny, and that purpose would be spiritual GROWTH?

If that was true, this final growth challenge would scare -or should I say DOES scare?- the living daylight out of us, because we have difficulty seeing and measuring it, although we all do ‘sense’ it, don’t we?

“Yup, I sure do”, Katie says.

“So what if Energy which (always has) moved EVERYTHING, is now moving us towards THAT direction –whether we like it or not?? The way it always has and the way ‘it’ got us here in the first place…violently? Could that be the reason why we are seeing all these disasters? Is the universe telling us something we are supposed to see? Are we supposed to learn and GROW?”

“Wow, says Katie, “that’s deep” and she looks at her watch…”shoot, I need to wake up the kids and get them ready or they’ll be late for school again.”

“Yes”, Jim says, “I gotta go too. Have another damn board meeting today about how we can save our shareholders money by letting people go. It pisses me off.”

She kisses him and says: “Let’s continue tomorrow where we left off today. You always listen to me and make me see everything through a different pair of glasses. I love you”.

“How did you sleep, Honey” Jim asked. “Pretty good, but I kept thinking all day about the conversation we had yesterday.”

“Which one, the one about the Sole Purpose of Life?” Jim says, looking up from his coffee mug.

“Yes. I mean, if everything you said is true, Love, and I believe it very well might be, then what is going to happen next? How much worse can it get? I mean, just in the last decade, we’ve had

-        in 2000 the Sri Lanka Tsunami,

-        in 2005 we’ve had Hurricane Katrina,

-        in 2010 we’ve had the  Earthquake in Haiti, the Gulf Oil “Spill” disaster, the Chile mining accident and then

-        in 2011 we had thousands of birds falling out of the sky in 11 different countries, fish dying by the millions in all oceans, revolutions which are ousting all these governments in the Middle East and Northern Africa, a huge earthquake in New Zealand, the 9.0 Earthquake & Tsunami & Nuclear Meltdown in Japan –and I’m sure I forgot a few and it’s not even April yet!!!

“Yup”, says Jim, looking into the horizon again, “that’s all very bad stuff. Why do YOU think all of this is happening so quickly?

As if she had been waiting all night long, the answers kept pouring out of Katie: “Well, if what you’ve said about this energy thing is true…aren’t all of these events kind of related?

Could it be that they are all directly linked to energy itself? I mean, we’re drilling all these holes miles deep into the earth and the ocean floors, we crack the earth open, (I believe they call it ‘fracking’) then inject hydraulic fluid at high pressure into the ground in order to fracture the rock above and release the liquid or gas below. Isn’t that INSANE??

And then they do it even in densely populated areas like Dallas and New Jersey, where they are now finding methane gas in their residential tab water and can actually BURN the water coming out of their kitchen faucets…I mean, isn’t the earth trying to tell us something?? Could it be that some of these disasters are actually a REACTION to what WE are doing??”

“I believe all of these are vary valid questions” Jim said. “What do you think this could lead us?”

“Well, you said yourself yesterday that everything in the universe is energy –no exceptions. You said energy changes and takes on different forms (transforms) within us and around us –all the time. You said any physicist or geologist knows that. I believe that’s true. And it’s obvious to me that the energy is now shifting very DRAMATICALLY and very FAST. Question is, are we willing to understand, to learn and change -or grow spiritually, as you put it- and shift it that energy for our own benefit or do we want to keep on going and be run over by it??? I mean, this looks to me almost like we are on a path of complete self-destruction.”

“Wow”, Jim says, you are really worked up about this. Keep going.”

“I think there HAS to be a solution”, Katie says, “because there always is. We always have a CHOICE. You said yesterday that the sole purpose for our life is development and growth. First physically, then mentally, then emotionally -and eventually spiritually. Only then can we achieve our highest state of existence (consciousness).

Am I making sense? Am I losing it? Do I start sounding like these guys in our church who are “a little out there?” Katie looked frightened at Jim and full of self-doubt.

“I don’t think so at all, Jim says. “I actually believe you are right on target. This has NOTHING to do with religion or faith. It is based completely on logic…SPIRIT.

If our purpose is coming to its final conclusion (fast), we HAVE TO decide whether we are willing to develop further –or not.  If we decide to learn, change and grow, we’ll be able to create our own “Garden of Eden” so to speak. If we start being responsible with our resources and technologies and treat each other with dignity and respect, we can enjoy prosperity without violence and drama. If we refuse to do that…well I really don’t want to go there.”

“That’s a lot of Ifs”, Katie observed, looking concerned again.

“True”, Jim says. “But do you remember how Robert Kennedy once lifted up the spirit of this entire nation when he said: “There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why… I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?”

“No, I don’t” Katie said, “but it sure sounds beautiful and right to me.”

Feeling he was onto something, Jim kept going: “Well, he addressed (and gave us) what we are lacking so badly right now, and need so desperately right now: The SPIRIT and desire and resolve to do what’s RIGHT, independent from all this stupid politicking and whether it’s more or less profitable. In the end it’s about ALL of our future, no matter whether rich or poor, left or right, Christians or Muslims, Americans or Japanese.

Katie smiled, hugged him and said, “I don’t know how you do it, Love, but you make me smile and give me hope even if everything around us looks like a lost cause!”
